I just haven't been able to be bothered writing about the inevitable election result, I suppose. To be honest, it looks like National are for the meantime going to be fairly benign - predominantly because they're keeping most of Labour's policies. Not that this makes it as good as having Labour in - remember it was Labour that introduced the policies in the first place, and they wouldn't be in place if a National govt was in power, no matter how benign.

The other reason I've got a feeling this National govt might not be the disaster it rightfully should be is Key's obvious disdain for Roger Douglas. The ACT Party have come off looking like fools since his bizarre pronouncements on election night (how anyone can reconcile his claims he wants healthcare and education available to all NZers, whilst at the same time saying there's going to be a lot of pain - guess who feels the pain the most, Rog?) - Hide is like an excitable poodle humping Key's leg, despite the fact they're not going to get any of their campaign promises, at all. Hide says he'll stick to his guns, but I guarantee you, he won't do it if it means bringing down the Nats.

That said, if all goes well over the next three years and they get re-elected based on this projection, that is when they'll feel they have a mandate to do what they naturally want to do - which is what we saw in the 1990s. This alone means we shouldn't get too complacent with National's 'Labour-lite' govt over the next three years. Yeah, it might be softer than we're used to seeing from the Nats, but if that's what gets them a second term and the political capital that brings, that's what they'll do.

So while their election win isn't a disaster right now, it still doesn't bode well for the future. Hope I'm wrong.

Spent the weekend down in the 'Tron, hung out with Rob and Jamie (from high school) in the afternoon, then spent the evening with about 70 other Greens/Labour voters and one ACT/National voter (I'll explain soon) drinking, chatting and watching the election at Roz and Geoff's place in Claudelands. Was a dress-up party, there was Pippa as Jeanette Fitzsimons, Matt Stormtroopa as David Bennett (National candidate in Hamilton), Tonamu as Brian Tamaki, Swainson as Don Brash, Geoff as Yasser Arafat (?!) and many more, including of course Roz's hilarious Sarah Palin.

Some random guy dressed up like he'd just been out playing rugby showed up, and we had to take shifts debating politics with him as he voted ACT/National. But as most of thier supporters, he was all slogans and no knowledge, so it seemed kind of silly. I don't understand the right-wing anti-intellectual thing, apart from the fact dumb people are easier to dupe, and left-wing politics is not as simple as the right's 'strip their wealth and lock them up' platform.

Cats are being dicks.

My story was on the front cover of the Waikato Times today! Wooo! Here it is at stuff.co.nz. Of course it's not 100% what I wrote originally, but everything has to go through the subs' grinder before publication, can't complain. And check it out - right at the moment it's the top story on the Waikato Times' website.

"Sexy sports presenter splits with ref" - the first sentence is enough! I know it's credited to the Sunday News in the small print, but they could at least not put it on the front page of the site if they want to be taken seriously now, huh?

So my week in Hamilton... On the first day, we popped into the Dewar court case in one of Htown's three adjacent courtrooms; it was the first day, and as I'd no idea what this Dewar guy looked like, I thought the guy being interrogated was Dewar. It wasn't, and was boring as fuck anyway, so I didn't really care when I found out it wasn't him.

On the second, we'd been in the Waikato Times office not even an hour and all the computers died. All us newbies panicked, while our tutor said things like, "how'd you have done this twenty years ago?".

A dumb question, cause (a) twenty years ago I was still learning how to tie my shoelaces, and (b) we've never been taught how exactly to go about things without computers. Use phone books? Okay, and what do we say when people tell us what we're asking is on the website? Write it longhand? Yeah, but will they mark it? Etc etc.

Anyway. I interviewed Pedro Carneiro on Wednesday morning, which was kinda cool. Part of me was hoping he barely spoke English so I could get everything down on paper without too much trouble. Turns out he's a fluent speaker, and I'd called him at 10pm (I was told it was 9pm in Portugal). Hmmm. Anyway, he was really cool, and going by his Youtube videos a much better classical marimba percussionist than any I've probably interviewed before.

So over the week I did a story on a high school surfing competition, a brief on APRA, the piece on Pedro, a preview of a play at the uni, and an article on a high school with a record label in Ngatea, which the Times decided to get a photo for - driving a photographer and I an hour each way to cover. I'm not sure which if any of these stories have been/will be published, being back in Aucks, but we'll see. The brief was included on the Ent page on Thursday, the play piece later this week I've been told. Fingers crossed for the rest.

Haha, Dave Letterman's getting ripped apart by someone from HR. He works one hour a day, high blood pressure, and has been with the company 14 years without a promotion. Hehe.

Anyway... the trip to Htown wasn't all work. Which doesn't mean the rest of the time was all fun. We stayed at the Ascot Lodge Motel; my room, and I suspect the others, had no internet, a shower whose five streams you couldn't position yourself in at once, and a Gideon Bible. Our tutor stayed across the road at the Kingsgate Hotel, which you can tell was awesome just by comparing the names.

My best attempt at entertainment alone involved hooking up my iPod to the TV, which for some reason only played the left channel, or playing mp3s off the laptop, which due to my lack of mp3s (AAC for the win) and desire to use the memory-limited laptop for getting thrashed at Civilization wasn't anything to rave about.

I went out one night and played pool with Rob and Jennah which was fun, and the night ended earlier than we wanted cause everything in Htown shuts early on a Tuesday; no bowling and video games for us.

On Wednesday we (the students) went out as a group to Barzurk, the gourmet pizza place. I think I was the only one who actually ordered a pizza. Anyway, it was an enlightening evening; it seems the young 'uns, predominantly those in the 3rd year of their degrees, want to forgo an honourable career in exchange for a money-grubbing career in PR, and the older ones, predominantly us in the grad dip course, intend to go into proper journalism. Strange, when you think at first it'd be the older ones who have degrees and go back to uni that'd be doing it for sanity and non-ideological reasons.

But you know, come the end of the course, we'll see what jobs are available...

Anyway, one particular student really ground my gears on the trip, but in that 'I find it amusing and a little frustrating while she gets completely riled up' kind of way. Cutting a long story short, she's a loud, incessant, rejects-anything-that-doesn't-sound-right to her kind of person, but not in that persuasive and admirable... sort of way. More in that intolerable, loud for the sake of it, inarguable... kind of way.

I remember last semester at the marae trip, after standing up for five minutes talking about how much Jesus meant to her, how angry and offended she looked after I spent my minute or so explaining why I was agnostic.

The most ridiculous part of the whole non-debate (at a pizza joint, for god's sake) was the moment she leaned past me and said directly to the girl to my left, a Christian who'd this far not disagreed with anything I'd said, "well we're not afraid to die, cause we know where we're going, eh?"

Quietly afterwards (and some even during), the others at the table (including she to my left) pretty much all agreed it was not a done deal Christianity was 100% correct, even if it was their faith.

I'm not sure if it counts for anything that she didn't stay with us for the entire trip, instead choosing to commute from Auckland to Hamilton every day, at her own expense, rather than spending three or four nights with us open-minded scum.

But the night was fun, regardless of how it comes across now. I do enjoy prodding and egging along people with bizarre opinions without giving too much of a shit myself where we end up. If I come out of it understanding another point of view a bit better that's great, if I disagree with their reasoning and they come out of it better understanding my point of view that's even better. If what they're proposing is blatantly absurd and they refuse to budge, the more ridiculous I can show their position to be without getting amped up myself, well that's a night well spent.

To counter-act her pro-Jesus bias and balance out the universe, as all good journalists are meant to do, I then thought I'd steal a bible. What could be worse than committing a supposed crime with the very word of God? As it turns out, most things are. One was left in the drawer in my room making it easy, but a quick glance at wikipedia suggests those who planted it wanted me to 'steal' it. Ah well. I'm sure when I'm done it'll make a good table leveller, projectile, fire, or something.

Court reporting lessons start tomorrow. Bed, I think.

The new Manics album came out on Saturday, but I didn't get to listen to it till this morning as [info]tariqa and I went to Hamilton for the weekend. Every time we go somewhere a fair distance in a car we inevitably have a fight, so once that was out of the way everything else went pretty well. hung out with Rob at his place, we had a couple of drinks and watched old "home movies" of us in our various bands and things. We came across this Big Elephants band practice (apparently that's the practice with a 'c') playing this song I have absolutely no recollection of, and it sounded awesome, like a long-lost Smashing Pumpkins track or something.

Anyway, crashed at mums, went to Chartwell with my little sister (who now sports blue-black hair, eyeliner and listens to Tool) where we all bought and devoured far too many lollies. And Hamilton being Hamilton, all three of us managed to run into people we knew.

Then we had a game of Monopoly, where I managed to build too many houses and rip off everyone for a victory. If only I was such an asshole in real life... and came home. I didn't get to listen to the new Manics album then either, cause of an awesome TV lineup of Simpsons, 'Earl, and Anchorman.

Sooo... I cranked it this morning at half past seven. It's definitely a step away from where they were heading on the underrated Lifeblood, which I suppose is a good decision in many ways - the reviews have been good, and the sales will probably overtake Lifeblood's pretty quickly. On first listen, the mashed up hard-limited production (that every album seems to have these days) doesn't do their re-discovered 'rock' sound any favours, but there's plenty going on in each of the songs I'm sure will shine through on a few more listens. In a lot of ways it sounds like a fuller, more eclectic follow-on from James' solo album. Lyrically, not so much, of course...

Anyway. Classtime.

Hardly anyone showed up to our gig at the Dogs Bollix on Thursday. I blame the Pigeons of Shit Metal for playing the same night. Anyway, those that did turn up seemed to enjoy it - particularly the two Brits who were reluctant at first to pay $2 each just to see the Megaheroes (who were on last), then left saying it was the best $2 each they'd ever spent.

I managed to accidentally bump off my compression pedal half way through, then not realise exactly what was wrong with my sound for two songs, and kinda screw up our grunge/punk crossover Big Stick. We got Matt from Amy Racecar/Megaheroes to play keys on one of our songs with a minute or so's learning... and I've no idea if it worked or not, as I couldn't hear the Korg through the foldback at all. I suppose only twenty or so people saw it, so we can't've lost too much mana. Or gained too much, if it happened to be awesome.

There's a good chance it was awesome though, if the Amy Racecar album is anything to go by. I've seen them a fair few times, never really got into what they were doing but 'appreciated' it nonetheless... but wow. Conclusions, their first full album, is something else. I always thought their melodic side (as evidenced by the scant recordings I'd heard) was lost in the live performances, and after enjoying but not being blown away by their set at the Vegas Girl last weekend, I thought yeah, good band, but maybe not for me. After hearing the album though, I'm thinking maybe I should've paid more attention at the shows...

I interviewed local band Phony Bone earlier tonight, they said their copy of the Amy Racecar album is in the mail apparently. Provided the article I write for them gets published, I'll be following in the illustrious footsteps of my fellow zine-publisher Emma and identical-qualification-twin Kiran by being published in NZ Musician.

Had lunch today with my old school friend Simon, which turned into a lunch / I hang behind the counter and chat to him while serving the odd customer afternoon. He's been living in Dunedin for a fair few years now, just moved into Hillsborough, which he assures me in angry voices is NOT Manukau, but just six kilometres east of Onehunga. Which if you squint your eyes, is pretty much Manukau. Or if you're looking at a bad enough globe, could be Tajikistan. Simon said that walking down the main street of Onehunga, it could almost be Fiji. But he didn't mention the army presence, so it probably is just Onehunga.

But anyway, was good to see him, he's as cynical and sarcastic as ever which is excellent. If he reads this he's gonna kill me maybe, but back in our high school days, Simon was a metalhead (into Megadeth and Iron Maiden, not a metaller/metlar, which at least I believe is a significant distinction to make) while the rest of us geeks were into either Oasis, the Presidents of the USA or the Who. That was about 1995 or so, and today, though I suppose I should know better, I asked Simon about this band I've seen on Alt TV I like called 'DragonForce'. He said he had no idea who they are, and instead said he liked the new Shins album, and had recently got into the Kaiser Chiefs.

Marty, who I work with, just laughed, and said DragonForce suck. But he hasn't seen the video with the picture-in-picture soloing, so he might be wrong.

And to close with a trade me story, a guy whom I sold a game to who never paid or got in touch with me and whom I gave a red angry bad feedback face... just gave me a happy face and said "good trade thanks". WTF?

Seriously. Now if only they'd ban it here! Marmite is where it's at, totally.

I bought us (kind of for [info]tariqa's birthday) a PS2 yesterday, one a couple of weeks old, off a guy I once spent half an hour talking to one quiet Saturday afternoon at the CD store. Came with Tekken 5, God of War and Gran Turismo 4. For the first time, ever, Tariqa was the one engrossed in a computer game while I was the one preparing dinner in the kitchen. Mmmm, homemade pizza. With lots and lots of cheese. Perhaps too much cheese, if there is such a thing.

Damn, I'm at work today, and the music is freakin' terrible. Madonna's American Pie is playing. It has all those cheesy William Orbit synths in it, and has managed to date more in four years than than... cheese...?

My friend Nathan has managed to score a 3 bedroom house in suburban Hamilton for $229,000 - said the owners were deliberately seeking out a young couple to sell to at a good price. Lucky bastard! He's having a housewarming next weekend which he's said will be 'old-fashioned' by which I assume he means drunken. So I might head down to the 'Tron a bit earlier than I expected, which will be cool, but then again I wasn't expecting to spend X amount of dollars buying a PS2 either...

I had this dream the other night I had a jet pack, and flew across the Earth, and touched down on the set of a new Tom Hanks movie. Tom was so impressed, he offered me a place in the movie. All 'cause I had a jetpack. It was so cool, then I woke up.

I'm at mums in Hamilton, it's late, and I'm fucking around on this website, almost in tears trying to hold back laughter. Once you've been there, you'll truly be able to appreciate the the 'poem' it created when I fed it the words, 'I want to fuck you like...'

I want to fuck You like an animal. I want to feel my heart beat fast. i want this to be a very good year for small town girls and soft summer nights. We d hide from the lights. On the Hill By Elliott Smith.

Cause Elliot Smith is a lot friendlier than Trent Reznor, right? It also advised me, after feeding it the first three words, '[info]tariqa is the greatest American Hero', and also 'love love me do You love me, I DON't know what to do With your Kids.' Which is a little confused. It obviously has no grasp of human physiology, telling me, ' money, it's a gas, Grab that cash with both hands and then the other.'. The other?!

Here are some other classics it has generated over the last hour or so...

Tina, you fat lard come get some dinner! I ve got to know When to hold Em. and when to fold em.

hey jude, don't make it bad. take a sad song and make it better Remember to let her into your heart, then you will be able to control my emotions.

how many roads must a man walk down before you can say that again?

It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships striking from a hidden base, have won their first two games of the season...

The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It s an interesting question. and one that I will never forget.

Woah. It just came out with this gem.

WHAT I GOT FOR XMAS

A bongo drum
A lamp
A new pair of chucks
Eight bottles of Lion Red
A set of trays
A comic book about rabbits called Apocalypse Meow (I suppose I'll know why when I read it)
A pair of rattlesnake magnets

And probably something else I've forgotten... Eight?

Ooh, I'm about to see Luke Skywalker take out the Death Star. Hang on. Darth's on his tail. Why doesn't Vader just shoot him? He's flying pretty straight. Leia looks worried. Here he goes... But wait! Han Solo comes in and takes out Vader, leaving Luke to destroy the Death Star! Wooo.

ANYWAY... Tariqa's already had a bitch and a moan about our weekend here. I suppose I'll add it also took AGES to do anything... like, when we got up in the morning to go to Raglan, I had a rest for about an hour, played an entire game of Age Of Empires II, and still had time to ask Tariqa, 'what is it exactly that we're waiting for?' At that particular moment it was washing, but who knows. Annalise, Tariqa and I got to Raglan almost an hour before the others, and were about ready to go home by the time they arrived. Of all the relatives, Annalise was perhaps the easiest one of the lot to get along with, despite the reputation... I heard many arguments while in Hamilton, some I was a part of (lets just say I'll never be trusting whitepages.co.nz again), some from the neighbours (if the kid won't go to sleep cause he's hungry, then feed him, don't scream at each other about it all night), but none quite as weird as the one between Tariqa's two sisters. Five minutes of eavesdropping, and I still couldn't work out what they were fighting about. Apparently it was towels, but it sounded more like a debate from a first year BSocSci tutorial.

My sister's growing up fast too. Last time I hung out with her, she was into Ashlee Simpson. Now it's all My Chemical Romance, she even had like six badges, pinned to her pants no less (like I used to have mine - she even said this was why she did it this way, woo). She seemed pleased with the Brotown series 2 DVD I got her also... My brother kicked my ass at Age Of Empires II, my first game and all though... so I've borrowed that in leiu of not being able to play Civilization 4, which still bugs me. It's a turn based strategy game, why did it need to be in 3D???

Hung out with Rob + Simon on Monday night, Tariqa stayed for the Family Guy movie, Jenna stayed with us through Anchorman, but then it was boys only as we hit town... boys only being the original plan, but hey. It's not like you get much guy talking done when you're watching Family Guy/Will Ferrell. Besides, I didn't stop laughing for about five minutes after seeing the wacky waving inflatable arm flailing tube man, so as you can see, not a lot of discussion could be had anyway... sensible, guy or otherwise.

We hit the Outback, cause Spirited was shut, played some pokies and some pool. Simon and Rob had a go at Sega Rally, which i opted out of due to the fact I completely suck at Sega Rally - I can't turn the car while it's in the air, you see, and I seem to spend most of my time in that game flying through the air, uncontrollably, and without hope of ever passing one checkpoint in time. Daytona USA I rule at, but not Sega Rally.

Rob might be moving to Auckland sometime, as Jenna is looking for higher pay - presumably because Rob isn't earning the required income to meet her standards - being owning a beach house, earning enough for her to stay at home, etc etc. It's when she said the most she can get per hour nannying in Hamilton is only, "about $17 per hour," nannying, that I thought to myself, how did Rob end up with this girl? Three years ago Rob was seriously considering (and had the plans all set up to) starting a commune on government owned land in the forests near the mountains south of Turangi. I suppose that's one thing growing up poor does for you; you learn to live with whatever life throws at (or in this example, doesn't throw at) you. I'd hate to be disappointed with myself if I didn't earn a brazilian dollars a year, cause it's so much easier... not earning a brazilian dollars a year. But anyway, one upshot of that is Rob might move to Aucks, which would be cool. I even got him to admit he mightn't mind giving music in rock band form another shot. But you know, they also mentioned Australia as another option, so who knows. I did talk to Laura this morning, she told me she's moving to Aucks in a few weeks, so yay, a friend. Well, another friend. I suppose I have some up here now. Kinda.

There was a commotion outside earlier on, I thought maybe a fight was going down, but no - Still Man (so named as he 'busks' by standing still and doing absolutely nothing all day) was having verbal fisticuffs with a preacher, and a third man was taking photographs, while bypassers looked on in bemusement. No idea what they were arguing about, I assume one of them started doing (or in Still Man's case, not doing) thier thing on the other one's turf. But if there's one thing Still Man sholdn't be doing while on the 'job', it's getting into arguments. He's meant to be a human statue, not John McEnroe. He's kind of diluting his brand with this behaviour. It's not the first time I've seen him yelling at people either, I once witnessed him verbally abusing a man in line at the ATM near where he stands. He must be bottling up his anger while he stands so still all day.

I had a dream last night I got sunburnt on my facve while wearing sunglasses, so had the white around your eyes effect, with the red cheeks and everything... it's happened before in reality, but in the dream, I had a solution to the problem - I borrowed some of Tariqa's new tanning lotion, and just coloured in my face all a bronzey kinda brown. Why didn't I think of that before?
